Gareth Pugh S/S 2011 Collection - Director: Ruth Hogben

I was on this great website that i can't believe i have only just found called http://www.businessoffashion.com/ and came across an article on how film is going to become such a large part of the fashion industry and just saw the Gareth Pugh short film.

I need to do a short film for my course and i have 7 weeks to do it in an i am definately taking inspiration from this.

Lanvin for H&M

BLACK SWAN

This is my kind of film.

I may be swayed by the fact that Ballet is the most beautiful thing in the world aside from Chanel Couture, but it actually looks like quite a good thriller too. I heard someone talking about it on Radio One this morning and from what was said about Nathalie Portman’s performance, it is one to put in the ‘Classics’ folder.

BOOK

Harrods very kindly sent me a letter with news of a new book release. Couture in the 21st Century is a collaberation between Harrods publishing and one of the world’s leading photographers, John Rankin.
It’s basically a fashion reference book of couturiers old and new with interviews with current designers such as, Giorgio Armani, Oscar de la Renta, Erdem and Hannah Marshall, accompanied by black and white portraits by Rankin himself.
It’s available to pre-order from the Harrods website but released on 15th October at £40.

Dan Mumford - Freelance Illustrator

After our lecture with Lloyd-Scott Tylor we had Dan Mumford come in and talk to us about his experiences as a freelance illustrator. It was so interesting to see the contrast between someone who works on their own and someone who works as part of a team all the time.
He said that he was always trying to get his work out there, even through his degree he was doing album artwork for bands he knew and logos for people but his work only developed into a certain style throughout his third year. I am always worrying that my work isn’t very cohesive, it’s all a bit scatty. You can see his work is a little gruesome and although he said on Wednesday that he has moved on from that, he has been doing it since he started, therefore it’s now what he’s known for. It will be hard for him to try and break out of this rut.
He gave us quite a lot of useful advice about promoting yourself but also about having to get yourself a workspace away from home to separate those parts of your lives. He looked like a very visual person and used a lot of images to portray his working life.
Then when he finished talking there were loads of questions, one of which was about taking that leap and moving into London straight after your degree without a steady job. he said that in his experience, those who moved back home aftr uni found themselves loosing their connexion with the creative world.
But i have definitely decided that my end of year exhibition is going to be in London as opposed to just in the Uni classrooms.

Lloyd-Scott Tyler - Fashion & Lifestyle Managing Editor Disorder Magazine

On Wednesday we had a lecture with the aforementioned man in aid of us hopefully getting a job at the end of our degree.
He was basically telling us to ‘Sieze the day!’ and take every oppertunity of work experience and interning that is offered to us. To make sure that we network, make people remember your name/face and keep people’s numbers.
Disorder magazine started as a Fanzine 8 years ago and was mainly an alternative music magazine with claims of being ‘ahead of the times’ but now it is re-launching as more of a fashion orientated glossy magazine. But i’m not sure if that will fit with it’s claims of being inspirational rather than aspirational. I like their idea of using undiscovered talent and making people famous or using celebs that no one else will touch but perhaps people do need to see the odd celeb that they are actually fans of, in order to be attracted to it.
His part about how to sell yourself to companies really gave me a kick up the ass to do more work on my own time and try to find people that will really want whatever I’m working on. Make yourself aware of fashion history but also of the current socio-economic trends so that you know what you’re talking about.
He said that he doesn’t believe that print will disappear but it is under threat and steps DO need to be taken to ensure that all bases are covered. They have released a Disorder App on iTunes which has over 4billion downloads and they have a website where you can view parts of the magazine articles and view the new Disorder TV.
I really thought that the lecture was useful and he didn’t seem like a really pushy guy, so there must be hope for some shyer nice people in the fashion world, but i do think i will be becoming a little more forceful and keep on top of things more.

21st Birthday

On 23rd Sept a Birthday shop was only going to mean one place and yes i went with my Mum and Grandma to the Selfridges Shoe Room.

Out of the whole room with £100,000 worth of 4,000 shoes on display, the Christian Laboutin room was without a doubt the best experience. It was so lovely in there. With miniature staircases where shoes were displayed and ivy crawling up a wrought iron coiled mini staircase and great sofas and carpet (very important).
We then went to Tiffany's and Hermés where i did come away with shopping bags and finally a lunch at Nicole Farhi on Bond Street and i would very much recommend the Risotto. It was the best Birthday EVER!!!

London Fashion Week

I worked London Fashion Week at Somerset House this season and there were some fantastic highlights. This Christopher Kane dress was definitely one of them. It was just beautiful, it was a shame I couldn't see it go down the catwalk. It was on display in one of the Portico exhibition rooms, which on one of my breaks I managed to have a quick look around.
I also managed to get a look around the Newgen tent where all of the up and coming designers exhibit outside the house. I saw Mark Fast and Holly Fulton in there but felt embarrased about going to talk to them so i just watched and gawped. It was a good experience and i realise that you have to start at the bottom of the pyramid but the work was a bit unvaried. I'd like the chance to be able to do something different next season, so perhaps I will look outside of the BFC next year.

Vogue Italia

My Mum went on holiday recently and wonderfully sacrificed some of her luggage allowance to bring back the largest Vogue Italia i have ever seen. There were 5 supplements nearly as big as the actual Magazine.

I still haven't ha the chance to read all of it ( or at least try, it's in Italian after all)

I posted this a while ago on my tumblr and i have now actually bought the T-shirt.

This is why I LOVE working at Next

My friend Amy http://worka-shopa-holic.tumblr.com/ did work experience at Next head office this summer and said that the AW collection was amazing and drip by drip it has come into our store and i am slowly buying all of it. This is just the latest purchase (don’t worry, i wont be wearing it WITH the furry boots) and after seeing exactly the same in Topshop i am so pleased with it.

Lanvin for H&M - Alber Elbaz "Daughter, Mother & Grandmother"

I was having another look through the Alber Elbaz interviews on the Lanvin for H&M collaberation in November and found this little clip. It got me thinking about something my Dad said to me recently.
When me and my mum were buying Mulberry handbags at the last Harrods Sale, i came away with the classic Bayswater tote in patent navy blue and she got the Mitzy Tote in a bright purple. Dad preferred mine because he said it reminded him of something his Mum’s generation used to have but Mum said that’s why she didn’t choose that style.
Our mums don’t want to look like their mums but we want to look like our Grandmothers?
I guess it changes as trends change but i’ve always had more of a classic look than my mum and she goes for unconventional looks. I suppose it’s an age thing then and it will keep on circling for generations to come.

Mark Fast

Ever since i tried on the black cobweb dress at the BFC pop up store in Bicester Village last year i have been OBSESSED. I was disappointed with the Topshop line, i was expecting a lot better quality but then again, Topshop has got really bad with quality recently anyway.
I worked at Fashion Week this September and managed to see some of the new Faster by Mark Fast collection and the man himself, THAT definitely didn't disappoint. This purple number is now my most coveted item. Isn't it just lust worthy.

Start

I'm swapping from tumblr so i'll need a bit of time and go a bit crazy with posting to start with but bare with me.

I'll start from the beginning.

This was my first post on how amazing the AW10 Next collection is. I work for Next so i may push it on you a bit but it just gets better and better. It is NOW cold enough to wear these lovely boots but i got them about a month ago and started wearing them even when it was too hot for it.
